Under 49 CFR 382.603, every supervisor or company official who may decide that a CDL driver needs a reasonable suspicion test must first complete at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and at least 60 minutes on controlled substance use.
- Owners of small fleets who supervise their own drivers
- Dispatchers, yard managers and foremen over CDL drivers
- Safety managers and anyone filling in for them
- Oilfield supervisors who work alongside CDL drivers on location
If an untrained supervisor orders the test, the test can be challenged, and the missing training is a violation an auditor will find.
